Painting and the “Journal” of Eugène Delacroix by Michele Hannoosh, Eugène Delacroix

Excerpt

Hannoosh, Michele. Painting and the “Journal”of Eugène Delacroix. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1995. Pp. 221.

In six relatively short chapters, three dedicated to the Delacroix’s Journal and three to the decorative schemes of the artist’s mural paintings, Michele Hannoosh has made a significant contribution both to Delacroix scholarship and to interarts studies in general. Putting aside the technical vocabulary of a “science of signs,” Hannoosh nevertheless inherits from semiotics the linguistic model she adopts for approaching the imbrication of literary and pictorial representation in Delacroix’s writing and painting.
